Users Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such medications should be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
